Let's be honest - major labels exist to make money.  This usually comes from signing lowest-common-denominator schlock and intelligence-insulting, pandering dreck.  Major labels are not “cool”, if I might be so immature as to define things in that light.  And do they care?  Fuck, no.  They may occasionally sign “cool” bands, but these are usually tax write-offs.

Even in this un-cool world of major-labelism, Arista stands out as particularly dorky.  Look at their track record, see who they’ve signed, refer to my above descriptors (i.e. schlock and dreck).

And yet, they signed The Church after two other U.S. labels had dumped them, and for this we owe eternal gratitude.  But wait!   The Church the, somehow, some way, scored a minor hit with the STARFISH (1988) album and the “Under the Milky Way” single, and Arista went above and beyond and released the vast majority of pre-STARFISH Church music on CD and budget priced cassette.  Five albums worth of out-of-print or never-released-in-America tunes.  Holy shit.

And then GOLD AFTERNOON FIX (1990), an amazing record  (and, to my ears, song-for-song stronger than STARFISH)  was released and flopped (translation:  sold only half of what STARFISH did).  And Arista decided to honor their contract and keep the band aboard for two more albums.  I assume they were rolling in Whitney Houston profits at this point and figured “Why the hell not?”

And oh what albums they were…..  It was the grunge era, and The Church couldn’t have cared less.  THESE ALBUMS WERE BORN TO FAIL MIGHTILY, AND FAIL MIGHTILY THEY DID.  But they were awesome.  PRIEST + AURA (1992) with its pure opium vibe, and then SOMETIME ANYWHERE (1994) with its long, meandering, zero-commercial-potential tunes and haunted-house-in-late-afternoon groove.  Glorious, glorious shit.

And then Arista even footed the bill for a bonus CD released with the first pressing of SOMETIME ANYWHERE (cleverly called SOMEWHERE ELSE), an additional seven songs that no one beyond the hardcore Church community would ever care about.

So I give full props to Arista for supporting The Church for this amazing six year run.   It almost makes up for Milli Vanilli.

Trump suggests Obama was 'behind' town hall protests

Donald Trump accused former President Barack Obama of being "behind" the protests that Republican members of Congress have encountered at town hall meetings across the country.

The allegation came during the president's interview on Fox News' "Fox & Friends," clips of which were released Monday. Interviewer Brian Kilmeade first states that Obama's "organization seems to be doing a lot of the organizing [of] some of the protests that a lot of these Republicans are seeing around the country and against you."

Trump is then asked, "Do you believe President Obama is behind it, and if he is, is that a violation of the so-called, unsaid, president's code?

"No, I think he is behind it," said Trump. "I also think it's politics, that's the way it is."

No, former President Obama isn't planning a coup against President TrumpPresident Obama Says He and Donald Trump 'Are Sort of Opposites'

The organization referred to is Organizing for Action, which describes itself on its website as "a non-partisan, issue advocacy organization committed to growing the grassroots movement by training, educating, and activating civically engaged community members across the country."

The group was founded in the aftermath of Obama's 2012 reelection and occupies the digital spaces once owned by the campaign. Its chairman is Jim Messina, who was Obama's deputy chief of staff from 2009-2011.

"I think that President Obama is probably behind it because his people are certainly behind it," Trump added. "In terms of him being behind things, that's politics and it will probably continue.

Organizing for Action's website links to the Town Hall Project, a separate, open-source group that compiles a list of events featuring lawmakers and encourages citizens to attend. The Town Hall Project's list includes events with both Republican and Democratic legislators.

There is no evidence that the project has any direct relationship with Obama.

Presidents traditionally abstain from direct comment on the actions of their successors. Following the 2016 election, Obama repeatedly said he wished to aid in a smooth transition to the Trump administration.

My slush pile is out of control these days, about the size of WAR AND PEACE and LORD OF THE RINGS combined so, since I've never been shy about self-publishing and since it's been over 2 years since my last self-published collection, I figured it was time.

Plus, how dare those bastards reject work as powerful and timeless as mine, y'know?  IT NEEDS TO BE SEEN!

In any event, it's about 150 pp. long, chock full of rainbows and fuzzy kittens, groovy cover art, sure to appreciate in value.

one after kahlo

she paints her suicide from
memory, the clouds, the shattered
glass, the broken body

she calls her ex-husband pig
and she calls him lover
and he laughs softly and
always in the arms of another woman

they have no children and
she paints this too, an
emptiness inside a blank expanse,
a sky without air, and she climbs
to the top of the canvas

she jumps

spends the last brilliant seconds
of her life naming stars

No, not that loser Christ.  I mean, seriously?  Savior, my ass.  Couldn't even save himself.

Second printing of my 2009 ultra-spectacular, full-on blow out, balls to the wall collection THE SEA OF STATIC is now out and among us.  Same great taste in exciting new packaging.  I mean, come on - DIG THAT ARTWORK.

Trump Waste Of Taxpayer Money Sets A New Record With 4th Weekend Trip To Florida

President Trump will once again spend the weekend at his Florida private club, as his 4th straight taxpayer funded trip will set a record by spending more money on travel in a month than former President Obama spent in a year.

Ken Vogel of Politico reported that Trump is heading back to Palm Beach, FL to meet with donors, “The party’s biggest donors are gathering in Palm Beach for a retreat organized by the Republican National Committee, and the president has been announced as the featured speaker, according to people with knowledge of the plans. A number of senior administration officials will also attend the retreat, the people familiar with the planning said, a key draw for the donors.”

Taxpayers will now be paying for Donald Trump and senior administration officials to meet with Republican donors in Florida. It is not a coincidence that the RNC is holding the donor retreat on the weekend in the same city as Trump’s private club.

When President Trump makes his fourth trip to his club in Florida, he will have spent more money on those trips alone ($13 million) than former President Obama spent during an entire year on travel ($12.1 million).

Trump’s recently complained that the country’s finances were a mess, and he promised to cut government waste and get the government’s finances cleaned up. If President Trump is serious about cutting government waste, his first move should be to stop taking needless trips to his winter vacation home at taxpayer expense.

The RNC could have held their retreat in the Washington, D.C., but that would have forced President Trump to spend a weekend in the nation’s capitol.

While he plans to take health care of millions of Americans, President Trump is living like a king on the taxpayers’ dime. 43,000 Americans will die each year if the ACA is repealed, but Trump will always make sure that the government has the cash to fly him to Florida.

At first, it was just the muttering misanthropic old guy who goes to Dawn's store (well. one of them), you'd always see him walking around town with a gold club (an iron of some sort), swiping at garbage and weeds and whatnot, but always on the lookout for ne'er-do-wells.

Gradually, tho, it seems to have caught on as a movement, all men in their late 50s or older, some walking dogs, some just walking, but all of them carrying golf clubs.  A few seem to genuinely need them for canes or walking sticks, but most seem to rely on them as easily visible weapons.  I see at least one or two guys every day walking around town with one.

Personally, I prefer the element of surprise in attack situation, I keep a flip-open box cutter in my hand at all times when walking at night.

It's a sad state of affairs.  I've been in this town for 25 years, and it's definitely in a spiral.  There have always been questionable people wandering around at night (myself among them), but the steady stream of muggings and beatings is something new.  It's amazing how many times I get asked if I have drugs to sell, or a cigarette someone can bum, or a light, or I just get asked off-the-wall questions by people who seem intent on confrontation.

I always liked that Mission of Burma seemed to be a true democracy, which made it no big surprise when the drummer was the one who had the most prolific post-MoB career.  I always thought Volcano Suns was his best project, just as loud & raucous as Burma but without the existential dread and surrealist unease.  Kind of like their loud, fairly goofy cousin.  Peter Prescott has one of the better shout/sing voices out there.  Good stuff.  Most of it can still be found, with a little effort.

More GOP politicians have been arrested for sexual misconduct in bathrooms than trans people

Dan Avery of NewNowNext pointed out in late March, in all the entire history of the earth, more Republican lawmakers have been arrested for lewd conduct in bathrooms than trans people.

Republicans – 3  (Jon Hinson, Larry Craig, Bob Allen)
trans people – 0.

“Obviously we need laws against senators using bathrooms, not trans people!” Avery writes.

The Impeachment Of Hillary Clinton

Republicans would never have reversed their views on Russia for Hillary Clinton.

February 20 – House Judiciary Chair Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) announced today that the impeachment proceeding against President Hillary Clinton would proceed directly to a vote of the full House.

“We know everything we need to know,” said Goodlatte. “This woman belongs in prison, or worse, for the high crime of treason.”

House Speaker Paul Ryan added, “We knew Hillary Clinton was incompetent and we knew she was corrupt. But trading favors with Vladimir Putin to throw the election, and to enrich the Clinton business interests, is a new low, even for the Clintons.”

“I don’t want to pre-judge this, since the Senate still needs to vote to convict,” added Senate leader Mitch McConnell, “but her behavior makes Benedict Arnold look like a patriot.”

“We now know,” said Goodlatte, citing the bill of impeachment, that the Clinton campaign did the following:
“Several senior aides in the campaign were in regular contact with Russian intelligence. They signaled the Russian leadership that a Clinton administration would give the Russians a freer hand to pursue expansionary objectives. In return, the Russians hacked into the Trump campaign’s confidential internal communications. All this while the Clintons had extensive business interests in Russia.

“Even now, an unrepentant Clinton has doubled down on her disgusting habit of selling out the security of the United States for the business interests of her family. China. After feigning a tougher on Chinese, Clinton abruptly backed down and confirmed America’s One China policy — and the Chinese government suddenly violated its own laws to resolve a long-blocked trademark dispute in the Clintons’ favor.”

McConnell added, “Pathetically, the Democrats have focused on the leaks, by patriotic members of the intelligence community.

They liked the leaks just fine when they were coming from Putin. During the campaign, candidate Clinton even urged Putin to provide more leaks of confidential Republic campaign conversations.”

”This is far worse than Watergate,” said Ryan, “Because it involved meddling by America’s most treacherous global rival; and because unlike in 1972, it actually altered the election results. I can’t believe that only a handful of Democrats are concerned about this.”

Okay, the shoe is on the other foot. Most Republicans have reversed their longstanding view of the Russian threat rather than embarrass Donald Trump. It’s breathtaking. They’re okay with having Putin be the dominant world leader as long as Republicans get their tax cuts, deregulation, Supreme Court, and dismantling of government.

With a handful of exceptions, the Republicans already concluded that selling out America in exchange for partisan goals is an acceptable deal. Hypocrisy is rampant in politics, but this takes it to an unimagined extreme.

A curious question for this Republic is whether it’s better or worse that our would-be dictator is so thoroughly incompetent and disorganized. You might say that a more competent demagogue would do even more damage. By now, he would have a fully staffed administration in place. There would be less chaos, less infighting, and a more consistent game plan.

At the same time, Trump’s very weirdness makes him that much more dangerous. Trump’s approval ratings keep dropping, but it’s a long way to 2018. The question is which pays the price first – the Republicans or the Republic.

'You don't get to tell us what to do': Fox News anchor confronts Reince Priebus over Trump's media criticism

Maxwell Tani

Business Insider

Fox News anchor Chris Wallace pressed President Donald Trump's chief of staff, Reince Priebus, to explain why the president characterized the media as the "enemy of the American people."

In an interview on "Fox News Sunday," Wallace asked Priebus if Trump believes that "a free and independent press is a threat to the country."

Priebus attempted to soften Trump's claim, saying the president was referring to reports that members of Trump's presidential campaign communicated with Russian intelligence officials during the campaign.

"There are certain things that are happening in the news that just aren't honest. We're not talking about everyone, Chris. We're not talking about all news. We are talking about something he's termed as fake news," Priebus said.

When the chief of staff dismissed the recent reports about Trump's potential ties to Russia as "total garbage," Wallace said the president's rhetoric did not have the nuance Priebus was articulating.

"Reince, here's the problem. I don't have any problem with you complaining about an individual story. We sometimes get it wrong, you guys sometimes get it wrong. I don't have any problem with you complaining about bias," Wallace said.

"But the president went a lot further than that. He said that the 'fake media,' not certain stories, the 'fake media,' are an enemy to the country. We don't have a state-run media in this country. That's what they have in dictatorships," Wallace continued.

Priebus argued that "other cable stations, not necessarily Fox," only briefly covered events like Trump's meetings with foreign leaders and announcement of the president's Supreme Court nominee, saying outlets instead focused on ties between Russia and the Trump campaign "all day long, on every chyron, every seven minutes."

"As soon as it was over, the next 20 hours is all about Russian spies, how no one gets along, how nothing's happening. Give me a break," Priebus said.

"You don't get to tell us what to do, Reince. You don't get to tell us what to do any more than Barack Obama did. Barack Obama whined about Fox News all the time, but I've got to say, he never said we were an enemy of the people," Wallace replied.

After Priebus said he was "surprised" Wallace would forget "all the shots" that Obama took at Fox News, the anchor interjected.

"He took the shots, and we didn't like them, and frankly, we don't like this either. But he never went as far as President Trump has. And that's what's concerning. Because it seems like he crosses a line when he says that we're the enemy of the people," Wallace said.

"I think you should be concerned about mainstream news outlets that are acting like Washington daily gossip magazines," Priebus replied.

Though media criticism was a staple of his presidential campaign, Trump has ratcheted up his attacks on many established outlets of late, singling out CNN, the Wall Street Journal, and the New York Times for publishing negative reports about his White House, often relying on anonymous sources.

Sanders: Trump a 'pathological liar'

Swedes scratch heads at Trump's suggestion of major incident

HELSINKI (AP) — Swedes have been scratching their heads and ridiculing President Donald Trump's remarks that suggested a major incident had happened in the Scandinavian country.

During a rally in Florida on Saturday, Trump said "look what's happening last night in Sweden" as he alluded to past terror attacks in Europe. It wasn't clear what he was referring to and there were no high-profile situations reported in Sweden on Friday night.

The comment prompted a barrage of social media reaction on Sunday, with hundreds of tweets, and a local newspaper published a list of events that happened on Friday that appeared to have no connections to any terror-like activity.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Catarina Axelsson said that the government wasn't aware of any "terror-linked major incidents." Sweden's Security Police said it had no reason to change the terror threat level.

"Nothing has occurred which would cause us to raise that level," agency spokesman Karl Melin said.
Former Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt tweeted , "Sweden? Terror attack? What has he been smoking? Questions abound."

The Aftonbladet tabloid addressed Trump in an article Sunday, "This happened in Sweden Friday night, Mr President," and listed in English some events that had happened in Sweden, including a man being treated for severe burns, an avalanche warning and police chasing a drunken driver.

One Twitter user said "After the terrible events #lastnightinSweden, IKEA have sold out of this" and posted a mock Ikea instruction manual on how to build a "Border Wall," saying the pieces had sold out.

Sweden, which has a long reputation for welcoming refugees and migrants, had a record 163,000 asylum applications in 2015 and it has since cut back on the number it annually accepts. Its most recent attack was in the capital, Stockholm, in December 2010, when an Iraqi-born Swede detonated two devices, including one that killed him but no one else.

At the rally, Trump told his followers to look what was happening in Germany, and also mentioned Paris, Brussels and Nice, in apparent reference to the terror attacks there. He didn't specify what was supposed to have happened in Sweden, simply saying "Sweden, who would believe this, Sweden."

Over the past few weeks, Trump counselor Kellyanne Conway has also referred to a "Bowling Green Massacre" that never occurred, and she was caught up in a public feud with CNN.
