The
Sound are one of the other 80s post-punk
bands that always seem to be lamented. “Just
a few lucky breaks” people say “and they would’ve been huge!”
No,
not really.
The
Bunnymen had presence, y’know? Joy
Division/New Order were awesome. The
Banshees were kinetic maniacs. The Cure
were shape-shifters.
The
Sound? Nice guys, but they wrote kind of
wimpy, poppy tunes. Not bad, but nothing
to phone home about. On a 1 to 5 scale,
their albums were:
PROPAGANDA **
JEOPARDY ***
FROM
THE LION’S MOLUTH ***1/2
ALL
FALL DOWN ***1/2 (This was their “edgy”
album, I’ve been told. Hmmm….)
HEADS
AND HEARTS ***
THUNDER
UP **
IN
THE HOTHOUSE (live album) ***1/2
BBC
RECORDINGS ****
Trust
me, I wanted to totally love these guys.
I read a lot of awesome stuff about them back in the pre-internet
days. Finally hearing their stuff was a
HUGE letdown. I’m still getting over it.
