What the hell was up with Bauhaus? I always wanted to like them, and they admittedly had a few pretty decent tunes here and there but, for the most part, they were laughably pretentious. And then they broke up and everyone involved went apeshit.
Peter
Murphy developed some sort of uplifting romantic spiritual streak, and his solo
work was incredible. CASCADE is his
best. No need to take my word for it,
but you might as well anyway.
Ash
and Haskins formed Tones on Tail, one of the all-time best post-break up groups
ever. The key to their quality was only lasting
about a year, so they never had time to descend into mediocrity.
And
then David J came back, and so was born Love & Rockets. Three albums of impeccable greatness followed
by commercial breakthrough (with an admittedly mediocre album). I seem to be the only person in the world who
likes album no. 5 HOT TRIP TO HEAVEN, but fuck everyone else. The dancey, trippy first half is pretty gosh
darn swell, and the rest of it still mostly better than album no. 4. The last two albums blow chunks, but DAMN
they were on fire for a few years.
And
we will not speak of the Bubblemen.
Ever.
