If there was ever a band made up of angry aliens and robots, Chrome is it. You can’t just put them in your mp3 mix, as they sound totally bizarre even among a steady parade of bizarre music by other bands. You need to devote at least an hour to nothing but Chrome (okay, maybe a little of Helios Creed’s early solo stuff, too) to start getting the big acid-soaked picture.
You’ve got the prominent-but-flat drums.
The bass, which isn’t always immediately noticeable.
The thrift store guitars and keyboards played LOUD through
thrift store amps and effect pedals and sometimes recorded by hand held tape
recorders with dying batteries.
The vocals, courtesy of either the robot on Quaaludes or the
dorky alien with a chip on his shoulder.
Start here, I’d say, and then explore on your own:
RED EXPOSURE
BLOOD ON THE MOON
3RD FROM THE SUN
THE CHRONICLES
SUPERIOR CATHOLIC FINGER (HELIOS SOLO)
BOXING THE CLOWN (HELIOS SOLO)
LACTATING PURPLE (HELIOS SOLO)
