poem for a woman bathed in sunlight

patience in and of itself
and then despair

not all truths are bitter

not all lies need to be spoken
                                      aloud

move closer to the mirror in
this room of accumulated dust
and then turn away

shame is everywhere

the absence of warmth

pull back the curtains to
find only sorrow

fading daylight

the sky is beautiful
but stained with poison

the poison tastes like sugar
licked from your lover’s skin

who is it that tells you to
leave the world a better place
than you found it?

why do you believe that
personal salvation is a given?

turn off the tv

close your eyes when the
trigger is pulled

even now
it’s not too late
